  • FRSO celebrates May Day in Milwaukee

    Milwaukee, WI – Several dozen Milwaukee activists attended the May 3 event “Celebrate May Day with Freedom Road Socialist Organization, A Conversation on the Year in People’s Movements and the Struggle for Socialism” to discuss the importance of International Workers Day and the fight for socialism.

    Two speakers from FRSO addressed the crowd that filled the bookstore. The first speaker, an immigrant rights organizer, spoke about the importance of the national movements in building the struggle for socialism.

    Tom Burke, also of Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO) , discussed the resurrection of May Day brought about by the 2006 Day Without Latinos, which brought millions of immigrant workers into the streets of America’s cities in protest of the reactionary Sensenbrenner Bill. Burke then discussed how revolutionaries can build the struggle for socialism and revolution, referring to the “one-two punch” of the multinational working class and the national movements in building the revolutionary struggle in the U.S.

    Looking to the future, Burke laid out the importance of communists continuing to organize: “We need to build the mass movements; we need to build the different struggles with practical slogans and themes. But at the core of it is the fact that we organize the working class. Workers have a lot of power – they just don’t know it yet. We need to take our politics to the people and engage them in struggle.”

    Followed by a lively question and answer session, the celebration was considered a huge success by its organizers. A number of individuals sought more information about FRSO and organizers hope to put together more events about Freedom Road in the near future.

  • गैस के सवाल पर आंदोलन की शुरूआत

    गैस के गोरखधंधे के ख़िलाफ़ लखनऊ में एक नया आंदोलन आकार लेने की राह पर है। यह नागरिक परिषद की पहल से संभव हो रहा है। रिलायंस के हित में गैस के दाम दोगुना किये जाने की सरकारी क़वायद की भनक लगते ही नागरिक परिषद तुरंत सामने आयी। लखनऊ का दिल कहेजानेवाले हज़रतगंज में 4 मई 2014 को आनन-फ़ानन आयोजित किये गये विरोध प्रदर्शन में बड़ी संख्या में लोग जुटे। अब विरोध के अगले चरण की तैयारी है। इरादा यह सवाल जनता के बीच ले जाने का है कि प्राकृतिक संसाधनों पर आख़िर किसका अधिकार है और उसे कारपोरेट की लूट के हवाले क्यों नहीं किया जाना चाहिए?  पेश है अभियान का परचा;

    गैस का दाम दोगुना हुआ 
    रविवार, 4 मई को, 5 से 7 बजे तक, जी.पी.ओ. पटेल प्रतिमा (लखनऊ) पर विरोध प्रदर्शन 

    आदरणीय नागरिकों, बहनों-भाइयों,
    मुकेश अम्बानी ने अभी हालही में  प्रेस कांफ्रेंस करके मांग की थी कि 12 मई को आखिरी वोट पड़ जायेंगे, चुनाव आचार संहिता खत्म हो जायेगी। अतः केन्द्र सरकार 13 मई को अधिसूचना जारी करके ‘वादे के अनुसार’गैस का दाम दोगुना करने का आदेश जारी करे। आक्सीजन पर चल रही केन्द्र सरकार के पेट्रोलियम मंत्री वीरप्पा मोइली ने अंबानी की मांग को ‘शासनादेश’ मानते हुए तुरन्त पेट्रोलियम मंत्रालय के अफसरों को निर्देश जारी किया कि गैस मूल्य वृद्धि की अधिसूचना 17 मई को जारी हो लेकिन ‘वादे के अनुसार’ पहली अप्रैल से मूल्य वृद्धि लागू की जायेगी। किसी पार्टी के किसी नेता ने वीरप्पा मोइली के इस कदम का विरोध नहीं किया, न ही इस मुद्दे पर देश के सामने अपनी पार्टी का रुख या अपनी नीति को स्पष्ट किया। मोदीवादी सभी चैनल इस खबर को पी गये और पूरी तरह मौन रहे।

    कारपोरेट प्रिंट मीडिया ने मुकेश अम्बानी और रिलायंस की गैस मूल्य वृद्धि की मांग को तो अपने अखबारों में छापा लेकिन उनके पालतू वीरप्पा मोइली जी का गैस मूल्य वृद्धि का ताजा निर्देश पूरी तरह डकार गये। मीडिया ने 17 मई को जारी होने वाली गैस मूल्य वृद्धि की सूचना देश की जनता को देना जरूरी नहीं समझा। सिर्फ ‘जनसत्ता’ अखबार ने अपने एक मई के अंक में पेज-7 पर भारतीय कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी के नेता गुरुदास दासगुप्ता के हवाले से छापा है कि चुनाव प्रक्रिया पूरी होने तक वीरप्पा मोइली के इस ‘अवैध आदेश’ को रोका जाय। इस संबंध में कम्युनिस्ट नेता ने मनमोहन सिंह, चुनाव आयोग आदि को पत्र लिखकर मांग की है।

    आपको याद ही होगा कि चुनाव आयोग ने सरकर से प्राकृतिक गैस के दाम में वृद्धि को लोकसभा चुनाव पूरा होने तक टालने को कहा था। साथ ही साथ सरकार को फैसला लेने का अधिकार है। अतः केन्द्र सरकार ‘अवैध काम’ न करे।

    सच्चाई यह है कि वर्तमान केन्द्र सरकार, भावी मोदी सरकार और भारत की ‘सर्वकालिक अम्बानी सरकार’ को जानकारी मिली है कि 16 मई को आने वाले  परिणाम में ‘मोदी सरकार’ का बहुमत नहीं बन रहा है। पूर्ण बहुमत निर्माण के लिए ‘काले धन की सरकार’ ने एक स्थाई कोष पहले से बनाकर सुरक्षित रखा है। पूर्ण  बहुमत के लिए ‘फुटकर पार्टियों’ और नेताओं को ‘गठबंधन शुल्क’ तथा ‘दलबदल फीस’ अदा करने के उद्देश्य सेयह ‘स्थाई काला कोष’ बनाकर रखा गया है। 16 मई से काले धन का खेल ‘स्थाई सरकार’ बनाने के लिए अनिवार्य होने वाला है। इसीलिए तिरंगे झंडे तले मोइली जी, अम्बानी जी की गैस मूल्य वृद्धि की मांग को ‘शासनादेश’ समझ रहे हैं और इसीलिए राष्ट्रवादी पार्टी केशुचिता-पवित्रता-चरित्र की गंगा में रोज स्नान करने वाले सभी नेता मोइली के इस आदेश पर चुप्पी साध लिये हैं। सभी पार्टियां, सभी नेता, सभीझंडे, सभी चैनलों के भोंपू गूंगे-बहरे हो गये हैं।

    मुकेश अम्बानी झूठ नहीं बोलते हैं। वे कह चुके हैं कि ‘कांग्रेस’ तो अपनी दुकान है। देखना है हमारे प्यारे मोदी इस फैसले पर गुस्सा होते हैं या नहीं। आपको बता दें कि इस साल मुकेश अंबानी की कम्पनी को लगभग 27000 करोड़ रुपये का निबल लाभ हुआ है और गैस मूल्य वृद्धि के 17 मई को जारी होने वाले सिर्फ इस एक आदेश से चालू साल में उनकी कम्पनी को 54000 करोड़ रुपये का अतिरिक्त फायदा गैस बेचनेे से होगा। यह भी जान लीजिए कि तेल और गैस निकालने व इसका शोधन करने वाली हमारे देश की सबसे बड़ी कम्पनी ‘सरकारी ओ.एन.जी.सी. कम्पनी’ या गैस अथारिटी ऑफ इंडिया लिमिटेड (गेल) ने गैस का दाम बढ़ाने की मांग नहीं की है। नागरिक परिषद की ओर से हम मांग करते हैं कि:

    1. गैस मूल्य वृद्धि के इस मुद्दे पर सभी पार्टियां, सभी नेता, सरकारें अपना रुख तत्काल साफ करें। 
    2. प्रधानमंत्री पद के दावेदार नरेन्द्र मोदी सहित भाजपा के नेता इस मुद्दे पर अपनी नीति साफ करते हुए कांग्रेस सरकार के इस अवैध कदम की निन्दा करें। 
    3. 12 सिलेण्डर तक की घरेलू गैस सिलेण्डर की सीमा समाप्त करो, घरेलू गैस का दाम कम करो।
    4. मुकेश अम्बानी की कम्पनी रिलायंस के हाथ से सभी तेल क्षेत्र, तेल कुएं, पाइप लाइन, रिफाइनरीज़, गैस कुएं, गैस क्षेत्र वापस लेकर सरकारी कम्पनी ओ.एन.जी.सी. को सौंप दिये जायें।
    5. तेल और गैस के क्षेत्र में काम करने वाले रिलायंस के सभी कर्मचारियों, अधिकारियों को सरकारी कर्मचारी घोषित करते हुए ओ.एन.जी.सी. में शामिल कर लिया जाय। उन्हें अतिरिक्त बोनस दिया जाय। 
    6. रिलायंस के हिसाब-किताब और खातों की गहन जांच की जाय और रिलायंस कम्पनी से लाभ प्राप्त करने वाले राजनीतिज्ञों को जेल भेजा जाय तथा मुकेश अम्बानी से लाभ प्राप्त करने वाली पार्टियों पर प्रतिबंध लगाया जाय। 
    7. घरेलू उपयोग में आने वाली तथा रेल, बिजली और खाद निर्माण में काम आने वाली गैस का दाम कम करने के लिए इस पर लगने वाला टैक्स समाप्त हो। 

     ताकि बिजली, खाद के कारखाने चल सकें। रेलवे, एन.टी.पी.सी., रोड ट्रांसपोर्ट और घरेलू उपयोग के लिए सस्ती गैस देश की आम जनता की जरूरत है। सस्ती गैस देश की आम जनता का अधिकार है क्योंकि यह प्राकृतिक उत्पाद है। धनकुबेरों के कारखानों में गैस पैदा नहीं होती। इसलिए किसी भी सरकार और किसी भी न्यायालय को यह अधिकार नहीं है कि वे देश की सम्पत्ति को अंबानी की निजी सम्पत्ति बना दें और अम्बानी जैसे लोग नेताओं से सांठगांठ करके देश की जनता और उसकी चुनी संसद को गैस के लिए ब्लैकमेल करें। इस संबंध में नागरिक परिषद के विरोध कार्यक्रम को सभी जगहों पर आगे बढ़ावें।

     कार्यक्रम: रविवार, 4 मई सायंकाल 5 से 7 बजे तक जी.पी.ओ. पटेल प्रतिमा के सामने गैस मूल्य वृद्धि पर विरोध प्रदर्शन तथा परचा वितरण 

    सोमवार 5 मई  से 17 मई तक अन्य जनवादी-समाजसेवी संगठनों के सहयोग से प्रदेश भर में विरोध प्रदर्शन आंदोलन के अलग-अलग रूप में कार्यक्रम आयोजित किये जायें। जन संगठनों, मजदूर संगठनों आदि की ओर से समर्थन में बयान जारी करवाया जाय। सभी से कहें उपवास, अनशन, प्रदर्शन, मार्च, पुतला दहन आयोजित कर इस मूल्य वृद्धि की निंदा करते हुए उक्त मांगों पर जोर दें। सभी का सहयोग लें आंदोलन को आगे बढ़ावें। देशद्रोही जनद्रोही नेताओं और काले धन पर पलने वाली पार्टियों को बेनकाब करें।

  • Benares Grapevine-3: यथार्थ का जादू और धारा-144



    यथार्थ तब तक यथार्थ है जब तक उसके आगे कल्‍पना का अंश जुड़ा है। आप यथार्थ को सपनों से काट दीजिए, तो ज़मीन पर कटी हुई उंगली की तरह तड़फड़ाता और बिलबिलाता जो कुछ भी रिसते हुए बचेगा, वह खंडित सत्‍य होगा जो जुगुप्‍सा पैदा करेगा। आप सपने को यथार्थ के बगैर पढि़ए, तो वह प्रहसन बन जाएगा। यथार्थ को उसके समूचे विस्‍तार के साथ रख देने पर भी बात नहीं बनेगी। उसका समकालीन होना आवश्‍यक है।

    अब तक हमने रियल पॉलिटिक पर बात की। इसमें सपना गायब था। यह जुगुप्‍साजनक था। हमने सपने पर बात की। सपना मोदी को हराने का, जिससे प्रेरित सर्वे आम आदमी पार्टी को हफ्ते भर पहले ही कागज़ पर जितवा देता है। यह प्रहसन था। आज हम यथार्थ पर उसके संपूर्ण विस्‍तार के साथ बात करेंगे जो काल से कटा हुआ, या काल निरपेक्ष, धूल भरी प्राचीन कोठरियों में जाकर अय्यारी बन जाता है।

    परसों देर रात हम लोग एक ऐसी बहस में मुब्तिला थे जिसका चुनाव इत्‍यादि से कोई लेना-देना नहीं था। दरवाज़ा खुला हुआ था। रात के एक बजे थे कि अचानक विष्‍णु खरे के कमरे से व्‍योमेश शुक्‍ल निकलते हुए दिखे। हमने चर्चा में उन्‍हें भी घसीट लिया। उनका पक्ष पहले से तय था। मेरे विरोधी रोहित प्रकाश को एक हमदर्द पाकर राहत मिली। व्‍योमेश नहीं आते तो शायद रात भर बहस चलती। उनके अचानक प्रकट होने से नींद बच गई। व्‍योमेश को दो शिकायतें थीं। पहली तो यह, कि कबीर मठ वाले कार्यक्रम में आयोजन समिति की ओर से विष्‍णु खरे के बयान पर खेद उन्‍होंने नहीं जताया था (जैसा मैंने लिखा) बल्कि संजय श्रीवास्‍तव ने। मेरे पास रिकॉर्डिंग थी, लेकिन मैंने माना कि गलती हो सकती है। फिर पुलिस को मार्च रोकने से राज़ी करने में वी.एन. राय की अकेली भूमिका के बारे में मेरे लिखे पर उन्‍हें एतराज़ था। मेरे पास तस्‍वीरें थीं। मैंने माना कि इसमें भी चूक संभव है। अब, जो मैंने देखा और समझा वह बेशक उनके देखे और समझे से अलग रहा, लेकिन यथार्थ एक ही था। उसके दो विस्‍तार थे। और भी रहे होंगे। यही खूबी है मनुष्‍य की, जो यथार्थ को अपनी-अपनी कल्‍पनाओं के हिसाब से विस्‍तारित कर लेता है और एकाधिक कल्‍पनाओं के टकराव में मूल पाठ गायब हो जाता है। 4 तारीख का फासीवाद विरोधी सम्‍मेलन अब लोगों की कल्‍पनाओं का हिस्‍सा है। तीन दिनों में गंगा में बहुत पानी बह चुका है।

    रियलपॉलिटिक की जमीन पर अजय राय गायब हैं। कांग्रेस लड़ाई से बाहर दिख रही है। केजरीवाल अब तक लोगों की कल्‍पना का हिस्‍सा नहीं बन पाए है, अलबत्‍ता ज़मीन पर वे ही दिख रहे हैं। नरेंद्र मोदी लोगों की कल्‍पनाओं से लेकर वास्‍तविकता की ज़मीन पर हर कहीं मौजूद हैं। अब भी, उन्‍हें चुनौती मिलती तो नहीं दिख रही। बजरडीहा जैसी विशाल बुनकर कॉलोनी में भी युवाओं को भाजपा की टोपी लगाए देखा जा सकता है। बात करते वक्‍त वे टोपी उतार देते हैं। मकानों पर आम आदमी पार्टी के सफेद झंडे टंगे हैं। बच्‍चा-बच्‍चा केजरीवाल की टोपी पहने हुए है। एक बुजुर्ग अशफ़ाक का कहना है, ”यहां के चार में से एक वार्ड पर भाजपा का पार्षद है। लोग उसे इसलिए जिताते हैं क्‍योंकि वो काम करता है।” अरविंद केजरीवाल इस सीज़न में इकलौते नेता रहे जिनकी तकिया मैदान में हुई सभा पूरी भरी हुई थी। अशफ़ाक कहते हैं, ”ये ऐतिहासिक रहा। अइसा तो आज तक कभी नहीं हुआ।” वहीं कोने में दिन भर काम कर के खड़े आसिफ़ कहते हैं, ”जलवा तो है।” लेकिन वोट किसे पड़ेगा? आसिफ़ मेरा हाथ पकड़ पर दूसरे हाथ से मेरी हथेली को ठोंकते हैं। दुर्गाकुंड पर जहां केजरीवाल रुके हुए हैं, वहां पान की दुकान वाला एक सिपाही को कुछ समझा रहा था, ”… वो ही के वोट दियाई… ओकर अंडरकरेंट हौ।” पान वाले के मुंह से अंडरकरेंट सुनकर मुझमें दिलचस्‍पी जगती है। मैं पूछता हूं, ”केकर अंडरकरेंट हो?” करीब दस सेकंड मेरा चेहरा देखने के बाद वो कहता है, ”आप क…।” उसकी दुकान पर अजय राय का स्टिकर सटा हुआ था।  
    शाम को टाइम्‍स खबर देता है कि अजय राय लड़ाई से बाहर हो चुके हैं। अस्‍सी पर मिले मित्र अजय यादव बताते हैं कि केजरीवाल जीत रहा है। मोदी दूसरे नंबर पर रहेगा। वे कहते हैं कि मदनपुरा से लेकर तमाम गांवों और मुसलमान इलाकों में केजरीवाल ही केजरीवाल है। एक  आशंका यह हो सकती है कि आखिरी दिनों में भाजपाई इन मुसलमान इलाकों में जाकर केजरीवाल के लिए वोट मांगकर उनका खेल बिगाड़ दें। इसी बीच डॉक्‍टर लेनिन फोन करते हैं। वे बताते हैं कि रोहनिया इलाके में ठाकुर, ब्राह्मण, मुसलमान और भूमिहार सबको अजय राय ने मैनेज कर लिया है। बजरडीहा वाले कह रहे थे कि अजय राय एक बार भी उस इलाके में इस बार नहीं आए। बीती शाम गुलाम नबी आज़ाद की रेवड़ी तालाब इलाके में सभा होनी थी। वहां के कांग्रेसी कार्यकर्ता जमाल भाई पर इसकी जिम्‍मेदारी थी। जमाल कहते हैं, ”आप लोग पार्टी तक ये बात पहुंचवाइए कि वो लोग सीरियस हों। बताइए, कितनी बेइज्‍जती हुई हमारी लोगों में। सब तैयारी कर लिए थे की सभा की, जनता इंतज़ार कर रही थी और नेता ही नहीं आए। अइसे थोड़ी होता है।” नेता इलाके में बगैर गए कैसे वोटों को मैनेज कर लेते हैं, यह मेरे लिए अब तक रहस्‍य है।

    रहस्‍य और भी हैं। मसलन, दोपहर ढल रही थी। चार बज रहे थे। बीएचयू में सिर्फ धूल उड़ रही थी। कला संकाय के पुराने भवन के बाहर दो-चार लोग बैठे पकौड़ी खा रहे थे। बाकी चारों ओर सन्‍नाटा था। ऐसा लग रहा था गोया कोई खंडहर हो जिसमें एकाध सैलानी पहुंचे हों। हम कला संकाय के लिए बाएं मुड़े ही थे कि फ्रेंच विभाग के पास से एक बेहद दुबला-पतला छात्र साइकिल को लहराते हुए गुज़रा। कुछ करीब आया तो पता चला कि वो गाना गा रहा था। और करीब आया तो उसके मुंह से बिल्‍कुल किसी अपरिचित राग में सुनाई दिया, ”मोदी-मोदी”। काफी दूर तक वो इसे गुनगुनाते हुए जाता रहा। उसकी साइकिल नज़र से ओझल हुई कि सामने तेलुगु विभाग के गेट पर समयांतर के संपादक पंकज बिष्‍ट और कथाकार प्रेमपाल शर्मा गाड़ी से उतरते दिखे। मैंने इससे पहले कभी भी दिल्‍ली के लेखकों को बनारस में नहीं देखा था। उत्‍कंठा में हमने कदम तेज़ कर दिए। विभाग में घुसते ही भूलभुलैया जैसा अहसास होने लगा। हर तरफ सन्‍नाटा था। हर ओर धूल थी। एक चपरासी ने बताया कि कार्यक्रम पहले तल पर है। ऊपर पहुंचे तो एक सभागार में करीब चालीस लोग जुटे हुए थे और बरसों पुराने रैली कंपनी के पंखों के बीच इकलौता एसी हांफ-हांफ कर चल रहा था। गोलमेज के एक छोर पर पंकज बिष्‍ट और प्रेमपालजी बैठे थे। जादुई यथार्थवाद पर इनका वक्‍तव्‍य शुरू होने वाला था।

    सबसे पहले मालवीयजी की मूर्ति पर माल्‍यार्पण हुआ। फिर हमेशा की तरह विश्‍वविद्यालय का कुलगीत गाया गया। तीन छात्राओं की बेहद सुरीली आवाज़ में गाया गया यह गीत मुझे नोस्‍टेल्जिक कर गया। कमज़ोर एसी के बावजूद पसीना सूख चुका था, ठंडक दिल तक पहुंच चुकी थी और रामाज्ञा शशिधर ने विषय प्रवर्तन के लिए चंद्रकला त्रिपाठी को आमंत्रित कर दिया था। चंद्रकलाजी ने बोलना शुरू किया। उनकी आवाज़ पकड़ में नहीं आ रही थी। उनकी आवाज़ पहले से बहुत कमज़ोर हो गई है। कोई शब्‍द हम तक पहुंच नहीं पा रहा था, इसलिए ऐसा लग रहा था मानो अब भी ”मधुर मोहर अतीव सुन्‍दर…” ही बज रहा हो। ऐसा लगा गोया विलायत खान सम पर पहुंच गए हों। इतिहास के किसी उपेक्षित कोने सा वह सभागार अपनी प्राचीन महक में धीरे-धीरे कुछ फुट ऊपर उठ गया। ज़मीन पर चुनाव जारी था, हवा में व्‍याख्‍यान। मुझे नींद आ चुकी थी। पता तब चला, जब मित्र नवीन ने मुझे खोदा। आंख खुली तो कुछ लोग मेरी ओर देख रहे थे। सन्‍नाटे को चीरती अचानक बजी मेरी नाक ने जादू को तोड़ दिया था। यथार्थ मेरी ओर खिंची लोगों की निगाहों में बिलबिला रहा था।

    किसी हादसे की प्रत्‍याशा में हम लोग बाहर निकल आए। बाहर से देखने पर वह सभागार फिर पहले जैसा दिखने लगा था। उसमें जो चल रहा था, वह सिर्फ उसके भीतर चल रहा था। जो बाहर चल रहा था, वह भीतर गायब था। बीएचयू का एनी बेसेंट सभागार और बाकी बनारस चुनावी यथार्थ के दो अलग-अलग विस्‍तार थे। कुछ जादुई घट रहा था दोनों जगह।


    सभागार के बाहर वाले बनारस में नरेंद्र मोदी की रैली पर रोक लग चुकी थी। बिड़ला छात्रावास के छात्र अनुशासित तरीके से आइपीएल मैच देखने में व्‍यस्‍त थे। बीएचयू के गेट पर आरएएफ की टुकडि़यां और ओबी वैनें तैनात हो गई थीं। शहर का आदमी मोदी की राह देख रहा था। शहर की औरतें घरों कैद में केजरीवाल की सलामती के बारे में सोच रही थीं। बच्‍चे किसिम किसिम की टोपियां लगाए खुश थे। उन्‍हें नहीं पता कि शहर में आज धारा 144 लागू है।

  • May Day rally and union picket for fired workers in Asheville

    Asheville, NC – Two-dozen workers gathered in downtown Asheville for a rally on May 1 to celebrate International Workers Day. Community members and workers brought red flags and signs such as, “Thou shalt not steal. Stop wage theft now!” The Asheville May 1st Coalition organized the rally, bringing together organizers from Freedom Road Socialist Organization, Party for Socialism and Liberation, Women Organizing to Resist and Defend, Veterans For Peace, Industrial Workers of the World, Asheville Homeless Network and Just Economics.

    “We want to educate people not only about the history of May Day and organizing but about the current efforts groups here are working on to improve life in Asheville for the working class. Unfortunately, we still lack the basics in Asheville, like the right to organize our workplaces without fear of retribution,” said Bella Jackson, an event organizer. “We lack a minimum wage standard that meets basic needs and our public transit does not yet adequately get people to and from their jobs,” she added.

    John Spitzberg, past president of the Asheville Veterans for Peace also spoke, “There can be no peace so long as hunger and want are found among millions of working people while the 1% have all the good things of life. Between these two classes, a struggle must go on until the workers of the world organize as a class.” He urged activists to come to the National Veterans for Peace Convention being held July 23-24th in Asheville.

    The next day, union supporters rallied again to picket outside a local Asheville newspaper, the Mountain Xpress. Workers and reporters are organizing with Communications Workers of America to form a union. They hope to improve their working conditions and protect their rights on the job. Picketers demanded the paper rehire senior news reporter David Forbes and photographer Max Cooper, who were both fired for union activity.

    Reporter David Forbes, respected by workers for the coverage of the Sitel Union Organizing efforts commented in a blog managed by the workers, “Too often the belief in Asheville and elsewhere is that the people who make a city work are powerless, that we can lose our livelihoods due to asking basic questions or a boss’s bad mood. We often hear that’s ‘just the way it is’ and we shouldn’t hope for better. This is a lie. We have rights, and we have power. Things can change.”

    Picketers held signs, “Xpress workers deserve better!” and “Xpress needs a union!” Organizers with the local IBEW also came out in solidarity, holding “Union yes!” signs.

    The workers leaflet read, “Asheville weekly newspaper Mountain Xpress is supposed to serve the community and grassroots activism, but the actions of its top management show a determination to bust a union and ignore employees’ rights.”

    Mountain Xpress is facing several unfair labor practice charges as a result of their retaliation against the workers trying to form a union.

  • Welcome home Lynne Stewart!

    San José, CA – On Saturday, May 3rd, more than 60 people gathered at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in San José for a reception and program with Lynne Stewart organized by the South Bay Committee Against Political Repression with a generous donation of food for the reception from the National Lawyer’s Guild. The event raised more than $1100 to help with the health costs of Lynne Stewart who is battling cancer.

    Long-time attorney, Lynne Stewart, had been imprisoned on a bogus ‘material support’ for terrorism charge, for her work defending an Egyptian cleric.

    While the audience was gathering for the program, a taped message from Mumia Abu-Jamal was played, welcoming the release of Lynne Stewart. The program was opened by Masao Suzuki of the SBCAPR, who had been visited by the FBI in September 2010 at the same time that antiwar and international solidarity activists in the Midwest were being raided by the FBI and subpoenaed to a Federal Grand Jury. Karen Wald then read a solidarity statement from the Cuba 5 for Mumia and Stewart.

    The first speaker was Ramona Africa, coordinator of MOVE, whose headquarter was bombed by the Philadelphia police in 1985. The bombing killed 11 MOVE members, including five children, and burned down an entire block of about 60 homes. She spoke about the MOVE 9, who have been unjustly imprisoned since 1978 for the death of police officer.

    Jeff Mackler of he Mobilization to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal, spoke about Mumia who had been on death row from thirty years, before finally having the death sentence dropped in 2012. He said that the struggle to free Mumia continues. Ralph Pointer, Lynne Stewart’s husband, thanked the audience for their support in the struggle to free Lynne Stewart and then Dan Carpenter of the National Lawyer’s Guild introduced Lynne Stewart.

    Lynne Stewart said that coming home from prison was a victory, and that “I am going to keep fighting so others can go home.” She stated that she had a special concern for women prisoners, who often were separated from their children. Lynne Stewart also spoke out for political prisoners in the United States, and urged the audience to go to the website of the National Jericho Movement to learn more about how to support political prisoners in the United States.

    Following the speakers there was a question and answer period. Pam Africa of MOVE also came to the event but was not feeling up to speaking.

    The San José event was part of a Bay Area tour with events in San Francisco, Oakland, San Rafael, and Sacramento sponsored by the Mobilization to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal, the Lynne Stewart Defense Committee, and KPFA.
