  • Utah Protest of U.S. aid to Israel on Al Nakba

    Salt Lake City, Utah – Students and international solidarity activists held a protest, May 15, to mark the 66th anniversary of Al Nakba. The students called for an end to U.S. aid to Israel and demanded justice for Palestinian American activist Rasmea Odeh. Protesters stood on the corner of the William Bennett Federal Building during rush hour waving signs and holding Palestinian flags. The protest featured speeches by local anti-war, Palestine solidarity and Palestinian activists. The rally, organized by the Utah Valley University Revolutionary Student Union, united groups that want to cut U.S. taxpayer money that goes to war and occupation.

    May 1948 marks the Zionist establishment of Israel. For Israelis, it’s a time of celebration. For Palestinians and Arabs it commemorates a time they call Al Nakba – Arabic for “the Catastrophe.” During the 1948 war, at least 750,000 Palestinian men, women and children were ruthlessly attacked, massacred and driven from their homes into refugee camps by Zionist terror groups. In a gross violation of international law, Palestinians continue to be denied the right to return to their own land. At the same time, the establishment of Israeli settlements steals more Palestinian land every day. The U.S. government does nothing to stop it.

    Bill VanWagenen, representing The Mormon Worker explains, “Though the Israeli government constantly demands that Palestinians recognize Israel as a Jewish state, we must of course wonder when Israel will recognize the crimes which allowed the Jewish state to come into existence. Also the crimes Israel has committed since that time to keep the Jewish state in existence that allows it to continue to confiscate and colonize more and more Palestinian land each year.”

    After outlining possible ‘solutions’ to the conflict, Utahns for a Just Peace in the Holy Land member Mahan Khalsa said, “Israel will be an apartheid state until 100% of the people have access to 100% of the land. Apartheid is a legal crime against humanity.”

    Protesters also demanded justice for Rasmea Odeh, a leader of Chicago’s Arab community who faces serious charges in a case that is part of a long-standing campaign of repression against Palestinians and those who work in solidarity with them. Her case is tied to the FBI and grand jury investigation of the Antiwar 23 and others. Rasmea Odeh’s case is set to come to trial in Detroit on June 10.

    Freedom Road Socialist Organization member Chris Manor said, “It’s outrageous that the U.S. government arrested and is prosecuting Rasmea Odeh for refusing to recognize the military occupation of her country. It’s important that people understand what she’s facing. We need to stand in solidarity with Rasmea Odeh as she goes to trial. We need to stop U.S. taxpayer funding of Israeli apartheid.”

    एक पुराना दुख है मेरे भीतर
    कुछ पहचानें हैं उसकी
    कुछ निशान बिखरे हुए, स्‍मृतियों में
    धुंधले निराकार से-
    जिनके बारे में ठीक-ठीक नहीं बता सकता
    पूछे जाने पर।
    एक विवरण बन सकता है नकली सा  
    कि जैसे दुख
    पक्‍की हरी काई सा व्‍याप्‍त हो
    किसी कुएं की गहनतम शिला पर
    धरती की छाती में बिल्‍कुल धंसा हुआ
    जहां पहुंचने को
    एक कुशल गोताखोर होना ज़रूरी है।
    जबकि सतह का यथार्थ हो इतना जटिल
    कि स्‍मृतियों के हरे पानी में पैर रखना ही
    डर देता हो फिसल जाने का
    कि गोताखोरी का हर कौशल जहां
    डूब जाने के एक डर से हो जाए आक्रांत, तब 
    दुख, अपनी जगह बना रहता है और डर
    कब्‍जा लेता है नई जगहों को।  
    कुछ ऐसा ही हो रहा है मेरे साथ।
    मेरा डर, मेरे दुख से अलहदा है
    और मेरे दुख, मेरे डर से असम्‍पृक्‍त
    डर, सतह पर है विचारों से घिरा
    दुख, तह में छुपा है विचारों के
    दोनों के बीच एक विशाल जगत है
    जो डराता तो है, लेकिन इसमें
    दुख जैसा कुछ नहीं होता
    कोई संवेदन नहीं, महज धुकधुकी एक
    लगी रहती है जिसे अकसर
    नकारती रहती है मेरी सामाजिक स्थिति
    अकसर नकली निकल जाता है यह डर
    डर से दुख तक पहुंचने का सफ़र पूरा नहीं होता
    जमता जाता है भीतर का पानी।
    कुरेदे जाने के इंतज़ार में
    गहनतम शिलाओं पर जमी काई
    भी जमती जाती है
    और ज्‍यादा…।
    इस तरह अनजाने
    एक प्राचीन दुख को भुलाते
    लगभग रोज़ डरते-डराते
    ही
    निकल जाते हैं दिन।
    डर के बीच-बीच
    अंतरालों में होता है जो व्‍याप्‍त
    उसे सुख कहना भी मुश्किल है
    एक ऊब है दरअसल, जो चमकदार पन्नियों में लिपटी
    आसन्‍न डर को करती है प्रकाशमान।
    हर बार, डर नकली निकलता है
    और हर बार
    कुछ फुट और ऊपर हवा में उठ कर
    चमकदार ऊब के आवरण में लिपटा
    मैं हलका होता जाता हूं।
    मैं महसूस करता हूं ऊपर उठता हुआ
    जैसे गैस का कोई मानव गुब्‍बारा
    जिसके भीतर कुछ तो भरा है
    जो सुख, दुख, डर, ऊब से इतर
    एक विश्‍वास सदृश है
    कि दुनिया अब भी ठीकठाक है।
    इस ठीकठाक दुनिया में लगातार
    उन्‍नत होता मेरा मैं
    दरअसल
    अकसर दुखी होना चाहता है
    यह घटना तकरीबन रोज़ रात को घटती है।
    जैसे नहाते वक्‍त रोज़ मेरे हाथ
    टटोलते हैं अपनी पीठ को
    यह सुनिश्चित करने के लिए 
    कि जो अदृश है
    वह वास्‍तव में है भी या नहीं।
    मेरे भीतर जो भर रहा है, भरता जा रहा है
    वह पीठ से मेरे हाथों की दूरी को बढ़ा रहा है
    और आश्‍चर्यजनक रूप से
    पीठ भी धंसती जा रही है भीतर की ओर
    मुझे डर है
    कि नहाते वक्‍त किसी दिन अचानक
    उदर में धंसी हुई न बरामद हो मेरी रीढ़
    डर है, कि गुब्‍बारे की गति
    किसी पल तोड़ न डाले गुरुत्‍व के इकलौते नियम को।
    इससे पहले कि ऐसा हो
    इससे पहले कि ऐसा हो
    मैं जी भर कर सहला लेना चाहता हूं
    अपनी पीठ
    चाहता हूं संभाल कर रख लूं किसी गुप्‍त तहखाने में
    अपनी रीढ़
    और डूबने के भय से पार एक बार
    बस एक बार
    समेट कर गोताखोरी का सारा कौशल
    निकाल लाऊं वह प्राचीन शिला
    स्‍मृतियों के हरे गर्भ के अंतरतम से
    जिस पर जमा है एक आदिम दुख
    कुछ धुंधली पहचानों और अनगढ़ निशानों के साथ।
    इससे पहले कि मैं निपटा दिया जाऊं
    डर की चमक और सुख की ऊब से निर्मित इस
    जटिल जगत में
    मैं चाहता हूं
    एक बार अपनी समूची रीढ़ के साथ
    भयंकर दुखी होना।
    इतना दुखी, जितना याद नहीं कि कब हुआ था
    कोई भी शख्‍स इस दुनिया में पिछली बार।
    इतना दुखी, कि दुख जम जाए बन कर फॉसिल
    समस्‍त ब्रह्माण्‍ड की असंख्‍य शिराओं में।
    इतना दुखी, कि आंच से उसकी दहक उठें
    सारे दरख्‍़त इससे पहले कि वे काटे जाएं।
    इतना दुखी, कि अपने-अपने सुख में लोट रहे हर जन को
    व्‍याप ले इसका शुष्‍क वितान।
    इतना दुखी, कि सबसे खूंखार चेहरे पर उभरी हुई सबसे हिंसक नस भी
    मुझे डराने की जगह दुखने लगे।
