  • Milwaukee based People’s Books Co-op boycotts Israel

    Fight Back News Service is circulating the following statement from the Milwaukee Palestine Solidarity Coalition.

    The Milwaukee Palestine Solidarity Coalition is celebrating a major victory this week as the People’s Books Cooperative bookstore joined a growing list of organizations that endorse the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel.

    The People’s Books Co-op board voted in favor of “instituting a consumer, cultural and academic boycott of the Israeli state due to significant human rights concerns involved with Israel’s policies against the Palestinian community,” according to a statement released on their website (http://tinyurl.com/kcuubky).

    People’s Books becomes the second cooperatively owned business in the United States to sign on to BDS, behind the Olympia, Washington Food Co-op whose endorsement won a decisive court battle after being challenged by pro-Israel Zionists.

    People’s Books joins the likes of Nelson Mandela, Naomi Klein, Stephen Hawking, Stevie Wonder, Alice Walker, Roger Waters, Elvis Costello, Gil Scott-Heron, Judith Butler, The American Studies Association, and many others who have signed on to the Palestinian call to boycott, divest, and sanction Israel. The BDS movement was launched by Palestinian civil society in a 2005 call to the international community.

    The People’s Books board responded to the call to BDS by conducting a survey of their membership which resulted in overwhelming support for the boycott proposal. Members of the Milwaukee Palestine Solidarity Coalition advocated for their proposal before the board of People’s Books, who previously did not carry any Israeli products. We applaud the members and board of People’s Books for their principled stance on social justice issues, and their strong stance in support of Palestinian human rights, especially while facing the economic difficulties inherent to operating a small local cooperative business.

    The BDS movement is a growing, non-violent threat to Israel’s ability to continue its illegal occupation of Palestine which includes settlement construction, home demolitions, and illegal detention of Palestinian civilians. The Israeli state is scrambling to buy itself a better image abroad by throwing millions of dollars toward Israeli propaganda events in the US which deceptively present Israel as a liberal paradise with diverse culture and a healthy democracy. Israel’s propaganda strategy places college students, social justice activists, academic and cultural workers, and progressive people on the front lines. But those very people are increasingly throwing their support behind the cause of Palestinian liberation.

    The People’s Books Co-op stands as an example for all progressive people to follow as we work to build a better world that is free of war and apartheid, and based on the principles of social justice and cooperation.

  • Chicago protest says: ‘Turkey, NATO, hands off Syria!’

    Chicago, IL – 100 Syrians gathered here, April 5, in front of the Turkish consulate to demand “Turkey, NATO, hands off Syria!” The group also called out their love for their homeland in Arabic, chanting “Tahya Suria!” Long live Syria!

    The incident that caused this international day of protest in places with Syrian and Armenian immigrant communities is an attack on the village of Kessab in northwestern Syria. Kessab is a mainly Armenian Christian community, which was attacked by the Turkish-backed terrorist group Al Nusra Front in late March. Thousands have fled Kessab, and the fear of a repeat of the Armenian genocide has caused even Armenian American Kim Kardashian to speak out.

    Mark Ahmad of the Syrian American Forum addressed the protest. “We want Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey to stop supporting and sending the terrorists to attack our motherland. Every one of you must inform your neighbors and coworkers and contact their legislators with the message that our U.S. policy should not support repeated aggression against Syria by the government of Turkey.”

    Joe Iosbaker of the Anti-war Committee-Chicago addressed the crowd. “We have to oppose the U.S. and its junior partners in NATO, which include Turkey; the U.S. puppets in the Gulf States; and of course Israel, the main provocateur and biggest cheerleader for war in Syria.” Iosbaker also called for the Syrians to support the Palestinian activist Rasmea Odeh, who is facing charges by the U.S. Attorney in Detroit for her work in the Palestinian community in Chicago.

    कट्टरपंथ की जमीन कैसे बनती है? आगामी चुनावों में नवउदारवाद, सांप्रदायिकता और सुविधापरस्ती के गठजोड़ से निकट भविष्य में नरेंद्र मोदी के प्रधानमंत्री बनने और संघ परिवार की जड़ें और मजबूत होने की संभावनाएं लोकतांत्रिक सोच रखने वाले सभी लोगों के लिए चिंता का विषय हैं। औसत भारतीय नागरिक घोर सांप्रदायिक न भी हो, पर बढ़ते सांप्रदायिक माहौल के प्रति उदासीनता से लेकर सांप्रदायिक आधार पर गढ़े गए राष्ट्रवाद में व्यापक आस्था हर ओर दिखती है। आखिर तमाम तरह की मानवतावादी कोशिशों और धरती पर हर इंसान की एक जैसी संघर्ष की स्थिति की असीमित जानकारी होने के बावजूद ऐसा क्यों है कि दुनिया के तमाम मुल्कों में लोग संकीर्ण राष्ट्रवादी सोच के बंधन से छूट नहीं पाते! इस जटिलता के कई कारणों में एक, शासकों द्वारा जनता से सच को छिपाए रख उसे राष्ट्रवाद के गोरखधंधे में फंसाए रखना है। इतिहास का ऐसा नियंत्रण महंगा पड़ता है।

    पिछले पचास सालों से गोपनीय रखी गर्इं दो सरकारी रिपोर्टों पर डेढ़ साल पहले चर्चाएं शुरू हुई थीं। इनमें से एक, 1962 के भारत और चीन के बीच जंग पर है। दूसरी, आजादी के थोड़े समय बाद हैदराबाद राज्य को भारतीय गणराज्य में शामिल करने के सिलसिले में हुए ऑपरेशन पोलो नामक पुलिस कार्रवाई पर है। पहली रिपोर्ट को लिखने वाले भारतीय सेना के दो उच्च-अधिकारी ब्रूक्स और भगत थे। दूसरी रिपोर्ट तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री नेहरू के करीब माने जाने वाले पंडित सुंदरलाल की अध्यक्षता में बनी एक समिति ने तैयार की थी। पहली रिपोर्ट का एक बड़ा हिस्सा अब सार्वजनिक हो चुका है। दूसरी रिपोर्ट आज भी गोपनीय है, हालांकि अलग-अलग सूत्रों से उसके कई हिस्से सार्वजनिक हो गए हैं।

    हमारे अपने अतीत के बारे में बहुत सारी जानकारी हमें चीनी स्रोतों से मिलती है। प्राचीन काल से दोनों देशों के बीच घनिष्ठ संबंध रहे हैं। इन सब बातों के बावजूद भारत में चीन के बारे में सोच शक-शुबहा पर आधारित है। भारत-चीन संबंधों पर हम सबने इकतरफा इतिहास पढ़ा है। हम यही मानते रहे हैं कि चीन एक हमलावर मुल्क है। हम शांतिप्रिय हैं और चीन ने हमला कर हमारी जमीन हड़प ली। ऑस्ट्रेलियाई पत्रकार नेविल मैक्सवेल इस विषय पर लंबे अरसे से शोध करते रहे और उन्होंने कई पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में इस पर आलेख छापे। सीमा विवाद पर भारत के दावे से वे कभी पूरी तरह सहमत नहीं थे। चूंकि हम लोग चीन को हमलावर के अलावा और किसी नजरिए से देख ही नहीं सकते, उनके आलेखों पर कम ही लोगों ने गौर किया। अब रिपोर्ट उजागर होने पर यह साबित हो गया है कि मैक्सवेल ने हमेशा सही बात की थी।

    रिपोर्ट में भारत की जिस ‘फॉरवर्ड पॉलिसी’ को गलत ठहराया गया है, उसका सीधा मतलब यही होता है कि भारतीय फौज ने घुसपैठी छेड़छाड़ कर चीन को लड़ने को मजबूर किया। अक्तूबर 1962 की उस जंग के कुछ महीने पहले तक चीन ने कई तरीकों से कोशिश की कि दोनों देशों के बीच सीमा विवाद को लेकर बातचीत हो, पर भारत का निर्णय यह था कि हमारी इकतरफा तय की गई सीमाओं पर कोई बातचीत नहीं हो सकती।

    यह सबको पता था कि दोनों देशों के बीच बहुत सारा इलाका बीहड़ क्षेत्र है, जहां सैकड़ों मीलों तक कोई नहीं रहता, और सीमा तय करना आसान नहीं है। बीसवीं सदी के पहले पांच दशकों में चीन की हालत बड़ी खराब थी और खासकर पश्चिमी सीमाओं तक नियंत्रण रख पाना उनके लिए संभव न था, इसलिए उपनिवेशवादी बर्तानवी अफसरों ने जान-बूझ कर भी चीन की सीमा को पीछे की ओर हटाया हुआ था। भारत ने स्थिति का पूरा फायदा उठाते हुए ‘फॉरवर्ड पॉलिसी’ के तहत घुसपैठ की। आखिर जंग हुई, जिसमें भारत को शिकस्त मिली।

    आज भी सीमा विवाद पर भारत सरकार का रवैया बदला नहीं है। अपनी दक्षिणी सीमा पर लगे तमाम मुल्कों में भारत ही एक ऐसा देश है, जिसके साथ चीन सीमा विवाद सुलझाने में विफल रहा है। जबकि आज अंतरराष्ट्रीय संस्थाओं की मदद से और जीपीएस तकनीक के द्वारा यह संभव है कि चप्पे-चप्पे तक जमीन मापी जा सके और सीमा सही-सही तय की जा सके। सही और गलत क्या है, इस पर बहस हो सकती है। पर जब सरकार पचास सालों तक अपनी गलतियों को नागरिकों से छिपा कर रखती है तो यह गंभीर चिंता का विषय है।

    हैदराबाद राज्य के भारत में विलय के इतिहास के भी शर्मनाक अध्याय हैं। हैदराबाद के निजाम के शासन में शहर हैदराबाद के बाहर रियासत में बेइंतहा पिछड़ापन था। जमींदार (जो तकरीबन सभी हिंदू थे) रिआया पर मध्य-काल की तरह अत्याचार करते थे। इसी का परिणाम था कि तेलंगाना में उग्र साम्यवादी आंदोलन फैला और आजादी के दौरान और तुरंत बाद के वर्षों में इसने जनयुद्ध की शक्ल अख्तियार कर ली।

    निजाम के सलाहकारों में इस्लामी कट्टरपंथियों की अच्छी तादाद थी। हैदराबाद राज्य ने भारत या पाकिस्तान में विलय होने की जगह आजाद मुल्क रहना चाहा। सरदार पटेल के गृहमंत्री रहने के दौरान सिख और मराठा बटालियन की फौजें भेज कर पांच दिनों की लड़ाई के बाद हैदराबाद का भारत में विलय कर लिया गया।

    निजाम की ओर से लड़ने वाले रजाकारों की संख्या पांच हजार थी। रजाकारों ने क्रूरता से ‘भारत में विलय के समर्थकों’ का दमन किया। पर यह कम लोग जानते हैं कि भारतीय फौजें हैदराबाद के मुसलमानों के साथ कैसे पेश आर्इं। जब पंडित सुंदरलाल समिति ने जांच की तो पता चला कि अड़तालीस हजार मुसलमानों की हत्या की गई थी, जिनमें से अधिकतर निर्दोष थे। बलात्कार और लूट की इंतिहा न थी। चूंकि यह रिपोर्ट अभी तक सार्वजनिक नहीं है, इसलिए इस आंकड़े की सच्चाई पर सवाल उठ सकते हैं। पर यह रिपोर्ट क्यों छिपाई जा रही है?

    ऐसी कई बातें हैं, जहां सरकार का रवैया लोगों से सच छिपाने का है। इन दो रिपोर्टों का उल्लेख प्रासंगिक है। कहा जा सकता है कि हमारा देश गरीब है और ऐसी जानकारी जिससे लोगों में सरकार के प्रति आस्था कम हो, उसे गोपनीय ही रहने दिया जाए तो बढ़िया है। पर अगर हमारे पास संसाधनों की कमी है तो हमारी कोशिश यह होनी चाहिए कि हम सभी जरूरी बातों का खुलासा करें ताकि सामूहिक और लोकतांत्रिक रूप से ऐसे निर्णय लिए जाएं जो सबके हित में हों। सच यह है कि अगर हम अपने पड़ोसी देशों के साथ सीमा विवाद सुलझा लें तो हमारा सामरिक खर्च बहुत कम हो जाएगा और हम शिक्षा, स्वास्थ्य आदि बुनियादी मुद्दों पर उचित ध्यान दे पाएंगे। इसी तरह अतीत की गलतियों को हम मान लें तो समुदायों के बीच बेहतर संबंध पनपेंगे और देश सर्वांगीण उन्नति की ओर बढ़ेगा।

    इसके विपरीत ऐसा राष्ट्रवाद जो हमें भूखे और कमजोर रह कर पड़ोसी मुल्कों के साथ वैमनस्य का संबंध बनाए रखने को मजबूर करता है, जो लघु संप्रदायों परहुए जुल्मों को नजरअंदाज करता है, वह हमारे हित में कतई नहीं है। इसका मतलब यह नहीं कि हम पड़ोसी मुल्कों के सामने घुटने टेक दें या लघु संप्रदायों की खामियों को अनदेखा करें। पर सच को छिपा कर और झूठ के आधार पर लोगों को भड़काए रख कर देश में स्थिरता और संपन्नता कभी नहीं आ सकती।

    आज हम लगातार ऐसी स्थिति की ओर बढ़ रहे हैं कि इस तरह का संकीर्ण राष्ट्रवाद लोगों के मन में घर करता जा रहा है। ऐसा माहौल बनता जा रहा है कि तथ्यों को सामने लाने का औचित्य कम ही दिखता है। एक ओर नफरत की लहर में डूबे लोग हैं, दूसरी ओर उनको सुविधापरस्त लोगों का साथ मिल रहा है। पूंजी के सरगना, जिनको मानवता से कुछ भी लेना-देना नहीं है, खुलकर ऐसे नेतृत्व का समर्थन कर रहे हैं जो देश को निश्चित रूप से विनाश की ओर धकेल देगा।

    एक ऐसा मुख्यमंत्री जो स्वयं जेल जाने से बाल-बाल बचता रहा है, जिसके मंत्रिमंडल में रहे एक शख्स को आजीवन कारावास मिला हुआ है; राज्य के पूर्व पुलिस प्रमुख और उसके सहयोगी जेल में बंद हैं, वह झूठे विकास का नारा देकर और ऊलजलूल झूठी बातें कर लोगों का समर्थन जुटाने में सफल हो रहा है।

    पहली नजर में ये बातें एक दूसरे से अलग लगती हैं। पर सचमुच ये एक-दूसरे से जुड़ी हुई हैं। एक बड़े देश का नागरिक और मुख्य-धारा के साथ होने में एक झूठे गर्व का अहसास होता है जो हमें अप्रिय सच को जानने से दूर ले जाता है। जब तक यह अहसास सीमित रहता है और सामूहिक जुनून में नहीं बदलता, तब तक कोई समस्या नहीं है। जिस तरह का जुनून और सांप्रदायिकता नरेंद्र मोदी के समर्थन में सक्रिय हैं, उसका उदाहरण बीसवीं सदी के यूरोप के इतिहास में है। तकरीबन नब्बे साल पहले इसी तरह की घायल राष्ट्रीयता की मानसिकता के शिकार इटली और जर्मनी के लोगों ने क्रमश: फासीवादियों और नाजी पार्टी के लोगों को जगह दी। इनके सत्ता पर काबिज होने के बाद उन मुल्कों का क्या हश्र हुआ वह हर कोई जानता है।

    जर्मन लोग आज तक यह सोच कर अचंभित होते हैं कि एक पूरा राष्ट्र यहूदियों के खिलाफ नस्लवादी सोच का शिकार कैसे हो गया? विनाश के जो पैमाने तब तैयार हुए और दूसरी आलमी जंग में इनके मित्र देश जापान पर एटमी बमों की जो मार पड़ी, उससे उबरने में कई सदियां लगेंगी। वैसी ही ताकतें भारत में भी अपनी जड़ें जमाने में सफल हो रही हैं और अगर वे सफल होती गर्इं तो अगले दशकों में दक्षिण एशिया का हश्र क्या होगा, यह सोच कर भी भय होता है।

    फासीवादी, नाजी, हिंदुत्ववादी, तालिबानी और ऐसी दीगर ताकतें झूठ और हिंसा के जरिए अमानवीयकरण की स्थिति में जी रहे लोगों को बरगलाने में सफल होती हैं। कैसी भी राजनीतिक प्रवृत्ति वाले दलों की हों, सरकारें सच को छिपा कर ऐसी स्थितियां पैदा करने में मदद करती हैं कि भुखमरी और सामाजिक अन्यायों के शिकार लोग झूठे राष्ट्रवादी गौरव में फंसे मानसिक रूप से गुलाम बन जाएं। लोग यह देखने के काबिल नहीं रह जाते कि सत्ता में आते ही कट्टरपंथी ताकतें आम नागरिकों के लोकतांत्रिक अधिकारों पर हमला करेंगी। शिक्षा में खासतौर पर इतिहास, राजनीति विज्ञान और साहित्य जैसे विषयों में आमूलचूल बदलाव कर संकीर्ण सांप्रदायिक और मानव-विरोधी सोच को डालने की कोशिश करेंगी।

    आज कुछ सच छिपाए जा रहे हैं तो कल बिल्कुल झूठ बातों को सच बना कर किताबों में डाला जाएगा और बच्चों को वही पढ़ने को मजबूर किया जाएगा। विरोधियों के साथ हिंसक रवैया अपनाने में इन ताकतों को कोई हिचक नहीं। ऐसी सभी ताकतों के खिलाफ और सच को सामने लाने के लिए आवाज बुलंद करना जरूरी है। इसलिए सिर्फ चुनावी पटल पर मोदी और संघ परिवार का विरोध पर्याप्त नहीं; देश के इतिहास, वर्तमान और भविष्य के साथ जुड़े हर सच को उजागर करने की मांग साथ-साथ करनी होगी।

  • Asheville protest demands end to deportations

    Asheville, NC – Amidst the backdrop of continuing congressional inaction on immigration reform, over 100 community members gathered at Saint Lawrence Basilica and marched to the courthouse, demanding an end to deportations and full legalization for all families. The Asheville chapter of Coalición de Organizaciones Latino-Americanas (COLA) joined over 80 cities taking part in a National Day of Action to End Deportations on April 5, organized by the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON).

    With patience worn thin from discarded political promises, the marchers chanted “Hey Obama, don’t deport my mama!” Protesters held signs that said “Liberation not deportation” and “ICE out of our communities,” with the hashtags #Not1More and #2Million2Many. Several speakers relayed their experiences dealing with the deportation of family members.

    “More than 1000 people are being deported every day and President Obama has the authority and the power – he can definitely do what’s right,” said Bruno Hinojosa, a member of COLA. Speakers explained that, despite promises to take action on behalf of immigrants, President Obama has instead functioned as deporter-in-chief.
