हड़ताल मजदूरों को सिखाती है कि मालिकों की शक्ति तथा मजदूरों की शक्ति किसमें निहित होती है; वह उन्हें केवल अपने मालिक और केवल अपने साथियों के बारे में ही नहीं, वरन तमाम मालिकों, पूँजीपतियों के पूरे वर्ग, मजदूरों के पूरे वर्ग के बारे में सोचना सिखाती है। जब किसी फैक्टरी का मालिक, जिसने मजदूरों की कई पीढ़ियों के परिश्रम के बल पर करोड़ों की धनराशि जमा की है, मजदूरी में मामूली वृध्दि करने से इन्कार करता है, यही नहीं, उसे घटाने का प्रयत्न तक करता है और मजदूरों द्वारा प्रतिरोध किये जाने की दशा में हजारों भूखे परिवारों को सड़कों पर धकेल देता है, तो मजदूरों के सामने यह सर्वथा स्पष्ट हो जाता है कि पूँजीपति वर्ग समग्र रूप में समग्र मजदूर वर्ग का दुश्मन है और मजदूर केवल अपने ऊपर और अपनी संयुक्त कार्रवाई पर ही भरोसा कर सकते हैं। अक्सर होता यह है कि फैक्टरी का मालिक मजदूरों की ऑंखों में धूल झोंकने, अपने को उपकारी के रूप में पेश करने, मजदूरों के आगे रोटी के चन्द छोटे-छोटे टुकड़े फेंककर या झूठे वचन देकर उनके शोषण पर पर्दा डालने के लिए कुछ भी नहीं उठा रखता। हड़ताल मजदूरों को यह दिखाकर कि उनका ”उपकारी” तो भेड़ की खाल ओढ़े भेड़िया है, इस धोखाधाड़ी को एक ही वार में खत्म कर देती है।

Another worker said they were threatened when they asked for legal benefits. “I worked as an electrician for seven years at a hot-rolling plant. When I asked for my PF and other benefits the employers asked me to leave. I could not find another job as an electrician and now put iron blocks into the furnace in another plant now,” said a worker in his early 20s.
Labour activists said with labour officials agreeing to meet the workers and inspect the plants, they were hopeful labour laws would be implemented.
“We met the Labour Commissioner on Monday and he deputed an inspection team with a labour official, a health officer, and a factory inspector to visit the plants. They found that most owners are running plants without registration numbers and do not follow even the Factories Act or the Minimum Wages Act. They seized a few plants’ records, and asked the owners, who could not produce the documents, to appear at the office this morning,” said Sunny Singh, a labour activist with Mazdoor Bigul Dasta, who is supporting the Garam Rolla Mazdoor Ekta Samiti workers’ strike.

The longest strike in South Africa’s history has ended. For nearly five long months, platinum miners affiliated to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) held out against the arrogance and intransigence of the platinum mine bosses. On Thursday the business press broke the news that an “in principle agreement” had been reached between the platinum mines and the union. The markets and the national currency made strong gains in response. On the same day the workers indicated at mass rallies in Rustenburg that they would accept the latest offer of the mining houses. The companies and the union are expected to sign the agreement soon.

President Obama’s intervention in the Philadelphia rail strike put striking workers back to work Sunday, creating a presidential emergency board to resolve the labor dispute. Obama’s action came at the request of Pennsylvania governor Tom Corbett.
The strike started Saturday as 430 workers, including engineers and electrical workers, hit the picket lines. International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers local 744 President Terry Gallagher says after five years without a labor agreement, Obama’s intervention is what his union was waiting for. Arthur Davidson is General Chairman of the IBEW.
[Arthur Davidson]: “We agreed to binding arbitration, which would have resolved it in no strike whatsoever but SEPTA refused too accept that.”
The Philadelphia SEPTA strike was the first in 31 years. Pensions and wages are the main issues. The striking workers are covered under the Railway Labor Act, which sets up special requirements for handling labor disputes. The workers are ordered back to work and barred from striking saga in for 240 days while a mediation process plays out. Stephen Bruno, Vice-President of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, says his members will return to work upon receipt of the Obama’s executive order. Bruno wants to see an additional raise of three percent for his members to make up for pension enhancements given to other SEPTA workers back in 2009.
Earlier this week, six workers were killed at the Bhilai Steel Plant in Kolkatha following an explosion at a blast furnace. In another incident, Rakhi Sonkar, a worker at Swiss Auto, took her own life after being dismissed for being a few minutes late. Sonkar was an outspoken labour activist who was active in fighting for workers rights. Her fellow workers protested about her death, while in another area of Wazirpur, near New Delhi, thousands of steel workers are involved in a prolonged strike over low wages and unsafe working conditions.
As reported previously, the suicide of Ho-seok Yeom, the chair of the local Samsung Electronics Service union, was a huge shock and highlighted the repressive nature of the giant Samsung Corporation. This year South Korean workers have seen an increase in repression towards unionists and labour activists. South Korean workers have a proud history of organising and fighting back against huge odds.
