Daily-wage teachers paid salaries after five months

ISLAMABAD, July 1: The Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) on June 30 released the salaries of 1,358 daily-wage teachers stuck up for five months.

It is for the first time that Rs44 million have been paid to the teachers through the Accountant General of Pakistan Revenue (AGPR). Previously, the salaries of the daily wage teachers were paid from the monthly student fund.

However, on November 20, 2013, in pursuance of Article 25-A (which guarantees free education for every child) CADD abolished all kinds of fees, charges, student funds and expenses.

At the moment, over 50 per cent teachers in 20 model colleges in the federal capital are working on daily wages.

After the abolition of the student fund, most of the model colleges stopped releasing salaries to the teachers due to which the teachers started protests and boycotted classes.

When contacted, Director General FDE Rafique Tahir said Secretary CADD Faridullah Khan made efforts to arrange funds for the salaries of the teachers.

“The Ministry of Finance allocated funds for the salaries and it was decided that the amount would be released through the AGPR,” he said.

After the detailed evaluation of the teachers’ documents, as many as nine centres were established at different educational institutions, including ICB G-6/3, ICG F-6/2, model colleges in F-10, Tarnol, Sihala, Humak, Nilor and G-9/3,” he said.

The teachers were called to the centres to collect the cheques of salaries from January to May.

The directors of FDE were present on the occasion and they handed over the cheques for Rs10,000 per month to teachers, he said. He said in future the salaries would be released by the AGPR.

However, some teachers while talking to Dawn said they could not get the cheques and the management told them that they would be called within a few days to receive the cheques.

A teacher from the IMCG I-10/4 requesting not to be identified said 22 teachers from the college had gone to the ICG F-6/2 to collect the cheques but six of them were told that their names were not in the list and they would be called after a few days.
