  • South African mineworkers on strike for 5 months

Seventy-five thousand platinum mine workers have entered their 21st week of strike action – the longest in South Africa since 1994. They are demanding a wage of US$1,250 per month. The mine bosses are offering $750.

    Background

In August 2012, mine workers employed…

  • Korean government repression continues even after death

The situation for workers in South Korea is becoming intolerable with recent suicides of two unionists due to unbearable working conditions. The two workers were Gi-seung Jin, a member of the KPTU Northern Jeolla Bus Branch in Jeonju City Sinseong Yeogaek Chapter (Jeonju City) and Ho-seok Yeom, the chair of the local Samsung Electronics Service union. In an unprecedented move, police stormed the morgue where Ho-seok’s body was stored, beat up the mourners, stole the body and cremated it so that his body could not be commemorated by his co-workers. Meanwhile, workers and families wanting justice for the Sewol ferry disaster were attacked by police and unionists arrested, including Yoo Ki-soo, General Secretary of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU).

    Stop the repression against workers

  • Cambodian activists released but only after heavy sentences and fines

Following major demonstrations earlier this year when a number of workers were killed, 23 labour and human rights activists were arrested. These demonstrations by garment workers were a part of an ongoing campaign for wage increases and better working conditions. A worldwide campaign was initiated to free these activists. While everyone was released earlier this week, they were also all convicted with varying suspended sentences and heavy fines. This is an attack on all Cambodian workers and an attempt to intimidate and criminalise labour organising.

  • Speak, An Ordinary Citizen’s Letter to PM

    Respected PM Saheb,

Being a member of Hindu Nationalists party, your silence on killing of Muslim guy by the goons of Hindu outfit is understandable but unfortunately for you, your silence seems to have sent wrong message to the Muslim residents of Unnati Nagar, who are changing their appearance and attire and have chosen to shave beard and shun skull caps and Pathani suits as they fear that their appearance and attire makes them easy target.

    Pune

Being a member of communal party, I don’t know how much you understand about Secularism but people of one community changing their attire and appearance because of the fear of goons of another community is very shameful thing to have happened and is not good for the future of the country, which is said to be Secular.

I don’t know how much your words can compensate the loss of that unfortunate family but they will surely make people aware of your much needed concern not only for the residents of Unnati nagar but also for all the Muslims of this country who are in shock ever since Mohsin’s killing.

I request you to break your silence and come out of Manmohan mode, not for me, but for all your supporters who have been saying that communal BJP at center is no threat to Muslim, minorities and to the Secular fabric of this country.

    Regards,
    Vaibhav Tiwari, a Concerned Citizen.
